Patterns of our Muhu Masters - Mihkli-Jaagu Juula
This book is in Estonian but the embroidery patterns are beautiful illustrations for easy reference.
The admirable Muhu embroidery is known all over Estonia. It has three generations of embroiderers and a hundred years of history behind it. The series "Patterns of Our Muhu Masters" is a tribute to the pattern creators of Muhu and also gives a vivid picture of the diversity of Muhu embroidery.
This pattern book contains the colourful and imaginative embroidery work of Julia Randmetsa (later Keinast), also known as Mihkli-Jaagu Juula. Her embroidered quilts date from 1913-1924. Her earlier work consists of geometric fantasy flowers, while her later quilts feature more pastel and lush bouquets and birds. Most of the quilts are embroidered on a very cheerful orange background.
To better introduce the colour choices and embroidery stitches of the time, in addition to the patterns, this booklet contains 10 pages of colour photos of old items embroidered by Juula.
Children, and why not adults too, can colour the book for fun.
