Combining Fair Isle and Intarsia: Scout Mini Kerchief

In this colourwork-focused class, students will explore the key techniques that are used within the Scout Shawl and the Scout Mini pattern. The main differences between Fair Isle and intarsia will be explored, as well as advice on working with multiple yarns at the same time, and how to achieve a professional-looking finish when transitioning between pattern blocks. Students will follow a colourwork chart and put these methods into practice, resulting in a multi-colored and multi-technique swatch. Upon completion of this class, students will be able to tackle other projects that feature flat Fair Isle knitting and intarsia with confidence.
No experience in the intarsia method is needed, but it is recommended to have some experience with Fair Isle knitting.

When you book the class you will also be emailed a PDF of the Scout Mini Kerchief pattern.

Materials to bring to the workshop:

  • 2 colours of any weight yarn with appropriate needle size to practice the intarsia technique
  • 5 colours of fingering weight yarn with appropriate needle size to work the colourwork chart (the Scout pattern uses a 3.5mm / US 4)

We have made some pretty beautiful kits for this pattern! We have two colour options; Florence's original colourway, and a Loop palette also using Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails, with Qing Merino Singles. The kit includes all the yarn you need and a Loop drawstring Dove of Peace project bag. The pattern is NOT included in the kit. But if you are taking the class, you will receive a PDF of the pattern.

There is no homework.  There will be a handout to take home.

11-4pm with a break for lunch (see details below)

There is a 30 minute break for lunch (not supplied by Loop, but there are lots of places very nearby on Camden Passage and Upper Street) or you are welcome to bring your lunch. We have a microwave and fridge you are welcome to use.

Tea, coffee, and cakes will be supplied throughout the day.
