Selvedge - Issue 128 Routes
Selvedge Issue 128 Routes
Trade and textiles have long travelled together. From medieval wool tariffs to the global cotton routes of the Industrial Revolution, cloth has shaped economies, cultures, and connections across continents.
In this issue, we follow the historic East–West maritime networks that carried not only goods but ideas, techniques, and traditions. From South Asian and Middle Eastern dhows to modern container ships, sea routes have defined how textiles move through the world.
We explore indigo, cotton, and the artistry of the makers who transformed global demand—from India’s muslins and boldly patterned cottons to the telia rumal and East Africa’s kanga. Their creativity forged textiles that reflect centuries of shared influence.
Finally, we look to today’s designers, such as Uma Wang and Mariana Silva Varela, who draw on these layered histories to create work rooted in respect and cross-cultural dialogue.
Wishing all our readers health, prosperity, and happiness in 2026.
