Muhu Stocking Exhibition Catalogue

£23.00
The Estonian National Museum is hosting the exhibition "Twilight of Our Everyday Lives. The world's biggest exhibition of Muhu stockings" from 8 August 2020 to 31 January 2021.
Around the turn of the 20th century, women on Muhu island started to knit colourwork stockings that leave every knitting enthusiast short of breath. Muhu stocking fashion did not skimp on anything. The unbelievable fine gauge, the fine yarn, the extremely elaborate patterns, the wildly vibrant colours - all made these stockings simply impossible to miss.
Muhu knitters happily combined patterns found in pattern booklets that they happened to have, with their own creations, and thus the stockings feature both exotic clusters of grapes and peacocks alongside local chicken, cats, and flowers. This abundance of patterns combined with the composition and colour palette resulted in a composition entirely specific to Muhu island, something that makes the stockings instantly recognisable among stockings worn elsewhere.
